We are excited to introduce decaffeinated coffee from Good Life Coffee Roasters! Coming from Colombia, the Huila region, this coffee will change your opinion of how great decaffeinated coffee can be. This coffee is for people who are sensitive to caffeine, want to reduce its use or want to enjoy a cup of coffee in the evening without affecting sleep.

La Serrania Decaf comes through our partner, the Colombian export company Caravela Coffee. It is grown in the southern part of Huila in the mountains surrounding the towns of Timaná, Suaza, Acevedo, Palestina and Pitalito. This special batch is the result of the hard work and expertise of around 20 farmers.

Farmers grow Caturra, Castillo and Colombia coffee varieties. The berries are picked by hand, sorted and dried for 24 hours before being washed and dried on each producer's own farm. The coffee is then delivered to Caravela's point of purchase in Pitalito for evaluation, and combined with batches from other growers before being decaffeinated.

Descafecol in Manizales, Caldas uses a sugarcane process to decaffeinate coffee. A solvent is needed to remove the caffeine, and the solvent used in Colombia, ethyl acetate (EA), is made from locally grown sugarcane. EA, which is basically alcohol, is formed in the fermentation process of sugar cane before it is mixed with spring water. The coffee is steamed so that its cellular structure opens up and the EA/water solution can extract the caffeine without damaging the beans. The process takes 8 hours, and the solution is changed frequently to remove 99.7% of the caffeine. The finished coffee is re-steamed to remove any EA residues before it is dried and polished ready for sale.

When coffee is processed to be decaffeinated directly where it is grown, its carbon footprint is smaller than it is in common cases where the coffee is sent separately to factories in Canada, Mexico or Germany where the process takes place. Fewer kilometers are generated. Decaffeinated coffee is also usually made from old-crop coffee, which is not flattering in quality. Whereas La Serrania is made from freshly harvested coffee. These facts are the reason why this decaffeinated coffee from Colombia is one of the best we have tasted.

We hope you enjoy and remember to tell your friends and family that good decaffeinated coffees really do exist! ”
